How to Get Your Life & Health License
Most states require you to complete a specific number of hours of pre-licensing education. Our recommended prep courses from ExamFX and Kaplan are approved by state departments of insurance and fulfill this requirement. Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate that makes you eligible to take the exam.
Time Commitment: 20-40 hours, depending on state requirements.
Once you have your certificate of completion, you can schedule your exam through the state-approved testing provider (e.g., Pearson VUE, Prometric). You will need to create an account, select your exam (Life, Health, or combined Life & Health), choose a testing center, and pay the exam fee.
Tip: Schedule your exam 1-2 weeks after completing your pre-licensing course to keep the material fresh.
Arrive at the testing center 30 minutes early with two forms of valid government-issued ID. The exam is computer-based, and you’ll receive your score immediately upon completion. A passing score is typically 70%, but this can vary by state.
Strategy: Use your full time, read each question carefully, and eliminate incorrect answers before choosing the best option.
After passing the exam, you must submit your license application to your state’s Department of Insurance. This usually involves completing an online application, paying a licensing fee, and undergoing a background check with fingerprinting.
Timeline: License issuance can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on the state.
